High Intensity Interval Training Does Burn More Fat

Posted by The Trainer on October 15, 2010 in General |
One of the main focuses of a good fitness program is to burn fat. What many people may not know is that High Intensity Interval Training will burn a lot more calories than the typical 30-45 minutes on a treadmill. The following study will explain a little more.

Today, research has proven that this belief in exercising at a low intensity to stay in the “fat burning zone” was false. At lower intensities, you burn more calories from fat, but you burn fewer total calories.

A 1995 study conducted by Grediagin, et al, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (95(6):661-5) compared fat loss in two groups over a 12 week period.

One group performed exercise at 80% of VO2 max for a duration sufficient to burn 300 kcal, the other group performed exercise at 50% of VO2 max for a duration sufficient to burn 300 calories (took a lot longer, of course). Hydrostatic body composition testing revealed that each group lost an identical amount of fat.

The authors concluded: “This study suggests that fat loss is a function of energy expended rather than exercise intensity. Therefore, if fat loss is the goal and time is limited, persons should exercise safely at as high an intensity as tolerable to expend as much energy as possible during their allotted time.”

Carpal Tunnel and Guitar

Posted by on October 13, 2010 in Carpal Tunnel Exercises |

I’ve never ever heard of carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of playing guitar. Then CTS knocked me out of all playing for over three years. The best way to avoid ever getting into this problem is providing the right exercise.

Injuries like CTS are cumulative. Once you begin to feel pain while playing your guitar, you need to make changes to prevent further damage. People with advanced CTS have been forced to change careers, no longer able to work without pain, and causing a serious and costly problem in their lives. Imagine never being able to play guitar because of the pain.

Carpal Tunnel Exercises – Neck Muscle Spasm Related

Posted by on October 8, 2010 in Carpal Tunnel Exercises |

Carpal tunnel exercises for stretching and tension relief are always a good idea. But bear in mind that this condition could be neck muscle spasm related. The myofascia – the tissue that wraps our muscles from head to toe, can retain tension – a kind of stickiness – so instead of sliding easily as our body parts move, retains tension and sticks. So, some carpal tunnel pain can originate in our neck.

Myofascial release – getting this special tissue to glide and relax, allowing our muscles and other soft tissues to move easily, can be done by massage – a passive therapy, or by special stretching, an active therapy that YOU do.

Exercises and Stretches Can Be Used To Relieve Carpal Tunnel Pain

Posted by on October 3, 2010 in Carpal Tunnel Exercises |

Extensive research into the effects of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (or CTS) on our limbs has produced some very interesting results. Scientists at the University of Oklahoma have found that more than 60% of patients experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of this disorder were able to avoid longterm problems and consequently had no need for surgical intervention. Over and above this they discovered that just spending 5 minutes only per day performing a carpal tunnel exercise program prior to the working day resulted in most early sufferers being able to relieve their symptoms altogether.
