Beginner Workout Mistakes

Posted by on July 15, 2010 in Beginners Workout |

If you are interested in getting yourself in shape or have just started a new workout regimen, here are some things you want to watch out for. There are some of the things that I have seen over and over again in health clubs and gyms all over the country. These are the mistakes that I see gym newbies make:

1. Overdoing it. Working out too much in the early stages and getting so sore that they can barely move. While some soreness is expected if you haven’t been working out in years you really don’t want to do much weight in the beginning. Do reps with an easy weight. There’s time to pile on the weights later.

2. Doing too many exercises that work the same muscle. Unless you are a body builder or a power lifter you don’t need to do exercises that isolate just one body part. I prefer exercises that work multiple muscle groups. It’s fine that one machine can isolate your biceps, but if you do pull-ups you can work your biceps and your lats.

3. Expecting immediate results. I won’t quote the saying about that infamous Italian city, but anyone whom you see that is in fantastic shape didn’t get that way after a few work outs. Maintaining good conditioning is easier than getting there. So plot your course out and stick to it. You need some guidance on this if you are new to working out. It’s going to take some time.

4. Avoiding free-weights. Particularly women seem to have an aversion to exercising with dumbbells or barbells. In part it comes from the fear of “getting too bulky.” I don’t know where this fear comes from. Probably the steroid pumped up female body-builders but it is very difficult for a woman to develop that type of musculature without some chemical enhancements. Which, by the by, no one should ever ever do, unless there is some medical reason. The benefits of free weights over machines are numerous. So work some free weights into the mix.

5. Ignoring diet. The first personal trainer I ever had, used to talk all the time about food. I didn’t realize at the time how important it was. Our bodies are amazingly adaptable to all sorts of diets, but the one common denominator should be natural. If you are serious about being healthy and getting in great shape, you need to put your diet on a good regimen just like your body. Eat foods that were grown or raised, not that came from a factory.

Everyone needs some guidance if they are brand new to the weight-lifting scene. You should either work with a personal trainer in the beginning or get a really comprehensive guide. There are some excellent resources available. One that covers, diet, nutrition and exercise is available through the site listed below. Remember don’t expect to change everything overnight, but set a realistic goal and then go to it.
